Before the draw, Latvia was placed in the third basket together with Lithuania, Georgia, Israel, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. This format is followed in order to reduce the possibility of member states ending up in the same semi-final with neighboring countries. The other member states are similarly “sifted” to avoid political votes. For example, all Nordic countries are placed in the second basket.
Serbia, Sweden, Ireland, Moldova, Switzerland, Norway, Israel, Portugal, Netherlands, Croatia, Finland, Azerbaijan, Malta and the Czech Republic will compete together with Latvia in the first semi-final, which will take place on Tuesday, May 9.
Albania, Australia, Armenia, Cyprus, Romania, Austria, Denmark, Lithuania, San Marino, Belgium, Slovenia, Iceland, Georgia, Greece, Poland, Estonia will participate in the second semi-final, which will take place on Thursday, May 11.
The Eurovision final will take place on Saturday, May 13, and will feature the top 10 countries from each semi-final.
This is the first competition where only audience votes from around the world will be taken into account in the semi-finals. Previously, in the semi-finals, 50% of the result was determined by the vote of the jury of the member states of the given semi-final, which this time will be taken into account only in case of problems with telephone voting.
Ukraine, the winner of last year, and the “big five” countries – France, Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany, which also have the right to vote in one of the semi-finals, have automatically secured their place in the final.
Germany, France and Italy will vote in the first semi-final, while Ukraine, Spain and the United Kingdom will vote in the second.
Although last year’s competition was won by representatives of Ukraine “Kalush Orchestra“, “Eurovision” will not take place in Ukraine this year due to security reasons. “Eurovision” travels to the United Kingdom, whose representative Sam Ryder won the second place in the voting with the song “Space man”.
As usual, the producers of the contest will determine the exact order of the countries’ performances shortly before the semi-finals, but for now it is known that Latvia will perform in the first half of the first semi-final.
The final of the national selection show “Supernova” will take place on February 11 and the winner of this competition will represent Latvia.
