The city of nine hills is completely gray at the moment, so the works of art brought to the “Auseklis” cinema by artist Karine Paronjancs seem even brighter. The shades of garnet color mentioned in the title of the exhibition are endlessly diverse – from carmine red to purple.
The artist says: “Yes, there are different nuances both in terms of colors, and also, as we know, metaphors and symbols are very typical in Paradzhanov’s work, and we can also read as a subtext that its color is really very different – it can be both passion, both life and posterity.”
Sergei Parazhanov was a banned director, and his works could only be shown in small cinemas in the province. Therefore, at the opening of Karine’s exhibition, Talsi was even thematically appropriate for this film.
The director of the “Auseklis” cinema, Māra Cēbere, explains: “The film is like a series of paintings, which are simply strung together in such an hour-long message. Every rustling, dripping, dripping, turning the pages of books is extremely important – it is, yes, also a pleasure of sound for people’s ears .”
Karine Paronyanc is bright and energetic, and the source of her inspiration, the famous Armenian director, could not be missed when he entered the room. Paradzhanov was an apolitical artist, but at the same time, his entire work was a struggle against the system. “The fight for freedom, for creative freedom, human freedom. And I think that right now, when there is a war, a pandemic, the whole tense political situation, a humanitarian crisis… And I see that I am not the only one who is interested in his work , but I see that also everywhere in the world. Somehow, that touch of a dissident is probably important and relevant,” says Paronjanca.
Art historian Ojārs Spārītis says: “Karine is a very deep artist, and I am very happy that she has been able to achieve so much at such a young age and prove herself internationally – with her genres, with her compositions and colors. And I late for a long flight, because she still has a lot to achieve!”
If Paradzhanov’s film was shown exclusively in Tulsa only once, Paronjanca’s bright paintings will be enjoyed in the cinema until April.
