This is a subject that has worried the municipality of Calmont since the end of 2021. But in the space of a year, the situation has become even more worrying. Because the municipality and its inhabitants could well find themselves short of general practitionersin the coming months.
“Our two doctors are over 60 years old. They are not due to retire for at least two years, but they are struggling to ensure their succession. So, we said to ourselves that we had to anticipate things in order toensure a certain continuity of medical presence on our territory. Anticipating and prospecting before the medical desert becomes a reality for us”, indicates the mayor of Calmont, Christian Portet.
Working conditions that young people no longer want
The Calmont elected officials then met the two patricians in order to find quick and lasting solutions. And to draw up an inventory. “They start and finish on time. They are in the office from 7 a.m. and consult until late, 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. The problem is that young doctors don’t want a life like this anymorespent in the cabinet, ”reports the city councilor.
It is therefore difficult to find replacements ready to ensure their continuation in such conditions. But the municipality is still looking for new generalists, thinking they still have time, before the situation becomes critical. “But today, the subject is hot »slips Christian Portet.
More than one doctor at 1is avril
And for good reason. “The Regional Health Agency (ARS) has informed oforganizational change with the Territorial Professional Health Community (CPTS), informs the city councilor. However, this new organization does not suit the younger of our two practitioners who, therefore, announced to us at the beginning of January thatshe would retire on 1is avril. »
A problematic situation for the municipality which, in two months, will find itself with only one doctor. “And it is not certain that he will take over the patient care of his colleague, knowing that in addition, some came from Pamiers, Mazères or Saverdun to see her ! »
“Find quick solutions”
Faced with this emergency, the mayor of Calmont decided to convene its municipal council in an exceptional meetingthis Monday, January 30, 2023. A closed session which should allow elected officials to “take information with health professionals”.
Again, this is a hot topic. And who will mobilize us well beyond the issue around our two doctors. You will have to be convincing, have a different project that stands out. But above all, we will have to speed things up and find quick solutions.
