Western Digital introduced the 20TB Ultrastar DC HS760 hard drive. The new product is the first WD HDD to use two independent head assemblies, delivering twice the sequential read/write speed and almost twice the random read/write performance of a single drive HDD.
The Ultrastar DC HS760 20TB model uses two heads on the Western Digital OptiNAND platform. The HDD includes nine 2.2TB energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording (ePMR) platters, plus NAND cache for metadata storage and write cache for better performance and increased recording density .
Using two independent readhead drives, the Ultrastar DC HS760 delivers up to 2x faster sequential read/write speeds (up to 582MB/s) and up to 1.7x faster random read/write performance than the Ultrastar model. DC HC560 20 TB with one drive and head. At the same time, the novelty is 37% more energy efficient compared to two separate HDDs.
The Ultrastar DC HS760 is equipped with one SAS connector and is defined by the system as two 10 TB logical drives. Because logical hard drives are independently addressable, they need some software configuration on the host side. Therefore, not all data centers will be able to use the new drive.
Ultrastar DC HS760 has 2TB more capacity than model Seagate Exos 2X18, also equipped with two drives and a pair of heads. In addition, the new product from WD is faster – Exos 2X18 offers only 554 MB / s. However, the Seagate solution is also offered with a SATA connector, which makes it more convenient to use.
As with all models of Ultrastar hard drives, the manufacturer offers a five-year warranty for the new Ultrastar DC HS760. The company does not indicate the cost of the HDD.
