The United States will lift its COVID-19 state of emergency on May 11. Meanwhile, Indonesia is still discussing ideally the transitional phase after the COVID-19 pandemic is enforced.
According to Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, Head of the Communications Bureau at the Ministry of Health, the policy is still being reviewed. Similar to the statement of the World Health Organization (WHO), the global emergency status of COVID-19 or what is often called a pandemic has not been lifted but has begun to transition towards endemic.
“We are still being studied and in preparation for the transition,” explained Dr. Nadia when contacted by detik.com Tuesday (31/1/2023).
Dr. Nadia said that this matter had been discussed with President Joko Widodo. However, the government has yet to decide when the emergency status will be lifted following it.
“Yesterday at the COVID-19 evaluation meeting, Mr. President said we were in a transitional preparation period,” he continued.
Separately, WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed that the COVID-19 pandemic was at a transition point.
“As we enter the fourth year of the pandemic, we are certainly in a much better position now than last year, when the Omicron surge was at its peak, and more than 70,000 deaths were reported to WHO each week,” Tedros said.
