Rare, Hybrid Solar Eclipse Will Occur in Indonesia

From the sea – A rare event of a solar eclipse hybrid is predicted to occur in a number of areas in Indonesia, on April 20 2023, this year.

Solar eclipse hybrid is a solar eclipse that appears from some parts of the Earth as a total solar eclipse, but in other parts it appears as an annular solar eclipse.

According to Research Center for Space Research, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Johan Muhamad, the solar eclipse that will occur on April 20 2023 in Indonesian territory is a very special eclipse because it is a hybrid solar eclipse that rarely occurs.

In Indonesia, this solar eclipse will be observed as a total solar eclipse (GMT). GMT will be observed especially in the eastern part of Indonesia, while in other areas of Indonesia it will be observed as a partial solar eclipse.

In BRIEF activities (BRIN Insight Every Friday), Friday (27/1), Johan said, this solar eclipse will be observed as an annular solar eclipse in the southern Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

GMT 2023 the trajectory of the Moon’s core (umbra) shadow on the Earth’s surface will pass through parts of eastern Indonesia. Johan explained the duration of GMT at this point lasts 1 minute 16 seconds.

Most of the 2023 GMT trajectory passes through areas of the sea such as the Timor Sea and the Banda Sea. The land that the GMT route traverses is part of Timor Leste and several areas in West Papua.

Several areas that will be passed by GMT 2023 include Fak Fak Regency, Teluk Bintuni Regency, Teluk Wondama Regency, Yapen Islands Regency, and others.

The forecast for the 2023 GMT sighting in Biak starts at 12.20 WIT, the peak of GMT occurs at 13.57 WIT, while in Jakarta the partial solar eclipse starts at 09.29 WIB and peaks at 10.45 WIB.

A solar eclipse occurs when the sun’s rays are blocked by the moon, the moon’s shadow will fall on Earth, said Johan.

“Areas on Earth that are under the shadow of the core (umbra) of the Moon will experience a total solar eclipse, meanwhile, areas on Earth that are under the penumbra will experience a partial solar eclipse,” said Johan.

We can safely observe a solar eclipse using a telescope equipped with a solar filter, special glasses for solar eclipses, a telephoto lens DSLR camera equipped with a solar filter and through a camera. pinhole (pinhole).

“Remember we can’t look at the Sun directly without using a special filter for the Sun,” he said.

Johan said a solar eclipse could be an interesting phenomenon for researchers in Indonesia to conduct research related to eclipses such as observation solar corona, gravitational lensing effect measurement, influence solar eclipse on ionospheric and atmospheric conditions and the influence of solar eclipses on the behavior of living things.

GMT 2023 can also be an educational tool for Indonesian people, especially children, to learn science.

In addition, a solar eclipse can attract many domestic and foreign tourists to visit tourist spots that offer the prospect of observing the eclipse, said Johan.

Indonesia has experienced solar eclipse several times, namely in 1983 there was a total solar eclipse, an annular solar eclipse in 2019, and a total solar eclipse in 2016.
