Jakarta –
Crocodiles are often the butt of jokes or ridicule for unfaithful men. But it turns out, literally Crocodiles are among the most loyal animals to their partners.
This was proven by research conducted by experts from the University of Georgia. Reported from detikTravel on Monday (30/1/2023), four experts namely Travis Glenn, Ruth Elsey, Tracey Tuberville and Stacey Lance conducted research on the crocodile mating system for a decade.
They took samples of alligator crocodiles at the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge (RWR) Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, United States. They observed crocodiles along 41 km in the bay of Long Island Sound.
“Given how very open and dense the population of crocodiles is in RWR, we were not expecting to find alligator loyalty,” said Lance, as quoted by Science Daily.
The results are surprising. It turns out that 70 percent of female crocodiles mate with the same partner every mating season.
“70 per cent of the female alligators go back to their partners. It’s really incredible,” said Lance.
“I had no idea the same pair of crocodiles, which were bred together in 1997, were still mating in 2005 and are probably still making nests together today,” he added.
Most surprising was found in the character of the male crocodile which is responsible for all the offspring produced from the same female crocodile. The male crocodiles mated during the last mating season in 2000, 2002 and 2004.
After the breeding season and the eggs hatch, male and female crocodile pairs are known as extraordinary parents. They share tasks and take turns looking after their babies. The male crocodile is also in charge of finding food for the female crocodile.
Female crocodiles can also show care and protection to their children so that they are not preyed upon by adult crocodiles.
