(Elbil24): Far more electric car drivers include monthly operating costs in the car purchase than those who own a petrol or diesel car. This is revealed by a survey carried out by Norstat on behalf of Naf.
In the survey, 6 out of 10 electric car owners answer that they factored in the operating costs when they last bought a car. Among those who own petrol and diesel cars, only 1 in 3 answers the same.
Operating costs mean monthly costs related to fuel, tolls, taxes, etc.
Bought Model Y? Here are 12 clever tricks
Electric car clearly cheaper to operate
When Norwegians buy a car, the purchase price is the most important factor in the equation – whether you buy an electric car or a fossil fuel car. People also calculate loan costs, insurance and loss of value.
The extent to which operating costs are taken into account therefore depends on whether you buy an electric car or not. Perhaps it is because the electric car buyers realize that they get a good deal out of the calculation.
– The calculation of operating costs is in favor of the electric car. If you can charge at home, you get very low fuel costs. In addition, tolls and service costs are lower. Electric cars are clearly cheaper to operate than petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid cars, says senior communications advisor Nils Sødal in a press release.
That’s how much you can save with an electric car
Naf has calculated what they think it will cost you in fuel costs to own an electric car for one year if you leaves home:
With a spot price of an average of NOK 1.50 per kilowatt hour (kWh) over a year, charging an electric car with a mileage of 12,000 kilometers and an average consumption of 19 kWh per 100 kilometers would cost around NOK 3,800. Then with electricity support, including VAT and online rental.
Without electricity support, it would cost NOK 5,800 a year, according to Naf.
A diesel car with the same mileage and average consumption of 0.65 liters per mile would cost NOK 15,600 a year, according to Naf. Assuming a liter price of NOK 20.
Now such charging can give unpleasant surprises
Favorable power support
If you increase the average spot price from NOK 1.50 to NOK 5, charging an electric car without electricity support would be slightly more expensive than filling up with diesel.
With power support, the charging cost would still not be higher than NOK 4,800, writes Naf.
– As long as you can charge your car at home, fuel costs are lower than you might think. The way electricity and diesel prices are now, diesel is four times more expensive, says Sødal.
