President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky urged the delivery of more and faster weapons to deal with the ‘very difficult’ situation amid the constant attacks by troops Russia in the Donetsk region. Zelensky accused Moscow of wanting to prolong the war and weaken the Kiev army.
“The situation is very difficult. Bakhmut, Vuhledar and other regional sectors in the Donetsk region — there are constant attacks by the Russians. There are constant attempts to break our defenses,” Zelensky said in a recent speech via video, as reported by the BBC. Channel News AsiaMonday (30/1/2023).
“Russia wants to prolong the war and weaken our forces. So we have to make time for our weapons. We have to speed up deliveries, speed up supplies and open up new weapons options for Ukraine,” he said.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on Sunday (29/1) local time, said that the Kiev military forces managed to thwart an attack near Blahodatne in the eastern part of Donetsk. Russian mercenary group Wagner separately claims control of the village there.
Zelensky’s latest call for additional weapons comes days after Germany and the United States (US) announced an agreement to supply modern battle tanks to Ukraine.
In a statement on Saturday (28/1), Zelensky stated that Ukraine needed a US-made ATACMS missile that has a range of up to 300 kilometers — which Washington DC has refused to deliver so far.
A separate adviser to the presidency of Ukraine revealed that talks were underway over the supply of long-range missiles. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force said the negotiations also discussed the provision of fighter aircraft.
