Erabaru.net. Meet Siri – a 3-year-old shelter dog who waited over 400 days for a home and has a permanent scowl to prove it.
Since her first day at the SPCA of Wake County in December 2021, Siri’s frown has seemed to have deepened, but the love she has to give has only grown.
“He was the sweetest thing,” Samantha Ranlet, a marketing communications specialist at Wake County’s SPCA, told The Dodo.
Siri was transferred to the SPCA from a partner shelter in North Carolina after being released by her family.
“He gave up after living outside his whole life,” said Ranlet. “He had a dog friend who lived outside with him, but at some point, they started fighting over food.”
When the two dogs could no longer live together, Siri’s family took him to a small shelter in the hopes of re-housing him. The staff members at the shelter fell in love with her immediately, but they didn’t have enough space or resources to look after her for long.
That’s when the Wake County SPCA stepped in.
“We pull pets from our partner shelters to give them more time to find homes,” says Ranlet. “In the case of Siri, that becomes very important. He did need that extra time.
Once Siri arrived at the SPCA, her new nanny got right to work trying to find her a new home, but it was more difficult than expected.
“In just over 13 months, she had 11 other people express interest in adopting her but sadly all fell through,” Ranlet said.
Siri was still waiting forever for her family to find her, but Ranlet thought her wariness of others might get in the way.
“It seems that, even though she used to have a canine friend, her bad experience made her feel bad for the other dog,” Ranlet said. “We’ve tried introducing him to a few people but he usually starts barking and growling. He really doesn’t want to be friends anymore.”
Because of this, Siri’s friends at the Wake County SPCA are looking for a family that can accommodate her needs.
“We’re trying to find a home for him that can accommodate a dog who doesn’t want to be around other dogs,” Ranlet said. “The one who doesn’t have any other dogs in the house.”
As she waits for her family forever, Siri enjoys spending time with her friends at the SPCA. And those, in turn, are happy to get to know him further.
“He’s very relaxed and not very energetic,” said Ranlet. “She was just a ‘cute girl’ who loved cuddling, munching on her toys and having snacks. He finds joy in the simple things in life.”
And her adorable pout tugs at the nannies more and more every day.
Her wrinkles have super powers, said Ranlet. “It’s so hard to look into her big, scowling, pouty eyes and not give her everything she wants.”
At one point during his 13 month stay, Siri was placed in an orphanage far from the shelter. The placement wasn’t permanent, but the loving pup was taken straight to his foster dad.
“We have to see the side of him that feels safe and secure,” says Ranlet. “That side of him that emerges when he is in a safe and comfortable home.”
Though their time together was only temporary, Siri’s instant connection with her adoptive father showed her friends at the SPCA that she had lots of love to give — and she was ready to share it with someone special.
Ranlet and her colleagues at the shelter hope Siri will find a beautiful forever home soon, but in the meantime, they’ll continue to shower the pouty pup with the kisses and cuddles she deserves.
“He has power over us all,” said Ranlet. “We love him very much.” (yn)
