Who is Jesus “Chuy” Garcia?
Jesús G. García was born in Los Pinos, a small town in Durango, Mexico. He is the youngest brother in a family of four children.
His father went to the United States to participate in the program “Laborer” and later to work in a refrigeration plant, while he, his mother and his three brothers stayed in Durango.
At the age of nine years emigrated to the United States, where he decided to study the career of Political Sciences and in 1977 he obtained US citizenship.
While studying for his degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chuy began organize workers for defend their rights and obtain more inclusive services.
In 1984 he began his political career and was elected member from Cook County Democratic Party Commission.
He was recognized as a leader with convening power and that built alliances among the African American and Latino communities in Chicago.
In 1986 he was appointed president of the Council Aviation Committee y helped implement the Automatic Way Transit (AGT) program at O’Hare International Airport.
In 2015 it announced as a mayoral candidate from Chicago against Mayor Rahm Emanuel, but Jesus “Chuy” Garcia came in second.
On November 6, 2018 succeeded as a candidate in his party’s House primary.
This is the second time that Chuy has run as a candidate for the Chicago City Hall.

Throughout his political career, the congressman has been and is a progressive voice who fights for improve lives of the working class and immigrants like him.
He is also committed to supporting young people to increase the access to education qualityto have one affordable housing and economic opportunity.
“From crime to unemployment to affordable housing, there is so much uncertainty ahead…so many live in fear of losing their homes, losing their livelihood, losing loved ones,” Garcia said.
In addition to the fact that Chuy García expressed that he wants “a Chicago for all”, a city like the one that welcomed him.
Chuy has advanced progressive values in confronting the city’s political “machine” and led a Community Organization for the Prevention of Violence.
