Tip: How to use Sony’s advanced camera settings

Advanced camera settings

Most mobile cameras have a pro mode where you can access more settings and see more information about the image. Sony has made the pro mode more accessible than most and also made sure to mimic the company’s system cameras in the user interface. It is wisely done. On the one hand, the camera interface is something that everyone who uses real cameras is already used to, and on the other hand, it is something that has been developed over a long time, by several different manufacturers who looked at each other, into an interface that is actually quite good at giving you a lot of parameters without that it feels unmanageable.

In the top left corner of the app you will find a virtual version of what is often a wheel you turn on a system camera. It says Basic when you turn on the camera, but if you press the word you see the wheel where you can choose camera modes.

If you choose the Auto mode, you don’t really have any additional settings to think about, most things are set to automatic. However, you get more information, such as which ISO number the camera is set to and the exposure time, and you no longer choose how many times the zoom you want to have on the image but what focal length you have on the lens. A good way to familiarize yourself with the basics of camera settings.

Next come the classic camera modes P, S and M. M means that you set everything yourself, while the automatics in the P and S modes help you by checking some of the settings. In the P mode, the camera is responsible for the shutter speed and you control the rest, to ensure as much as possible that the image will be sharp. In the S mode, on the contrary, it is above all the exposure time that you control. For example, if you want to take dark pictures where light leaves traces, this is the mode you should use. MR finally lets you save default camera settings and access them here. What you find in a real camera but miss here is the A mode, which is due to the fact that, unlike system cameras and compact cameras, mobile cameras do not have an adjustable aperture size.
