British Flybe bankrupt, all flights from Schiphol canceled

The British aviation authorities are calling on Flybe passengers to stop coming to the airport. The company says that the canceled flights will not be moved and that the company is unable to rebook passengers. Approximately 80,000 travelers are affected by the bankruptcy. Two trustees have now been appointed.

Flybe would fly from Schiphol to East Midlands, Belfast and Birmingham on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Those flights have been cancelled. The flights to London Heathrow that should have been carried out on Sunday morning and evening have also been cancelled.

“We have also seen that Flybe has canceled its flights,” says a spokesman for Schiphol. “They have informed their travelers not to come to the airport. We see that this is well received.” If passengers do come to Schiphol, they can report to Flybe’s handling agent, Aviapartner, according to Schiphol.

British Airways, Ryanair and Easyjet are now offering Flybe travelers alternative flights for an additional fee.

Lockdowns en brexit

Flybe is KLM Cityhopper’s main competitor on flights to the United Kingdom. The company, founded in 1979, was once the largest regional airline in Europe, with 8 million passengers and 200 destinations.

Partly due to the travel restrictions and lockdowns of the corona crisis and because the number of passengers between Great Britain and Europe has decreased due to Brexit, the company came in trouble two years ago. Even then, all flights, including the 19 daily flights from Schiphol, were suddenly canceled. More than a thousand travelers were then stranded at the airport.

It was restarted in 2022. Flybe started to focus on flights within Great Britain and Ireland with five propeller planes. With Geneva, Amsterdam was still the only international destination. Last fall, the company added new destinations.
