PARIS (Reuters) – French luxury group Kering said on Saturday it had appointed Sabato Di Sarno, one of Valentino’s chief designers, as creative director of Gucci, its flagship brand.

At Gucci, Di Sarno will be tasked with reviving the brand, which accounted for two-thirds of Kering’s profits in 2021 but is starting to lose momentum compared to its resounding success between 2015 and 2019.

Di Sarno, 39, began his career at Prada in 2005 before moving to Dolce & Gabbana, then joined Valentino in 2009 where he held several positions before being appointed director of men’s and women’s fashion groups to work closely with chief designer Pierpaolo Piccioli.

“I am proud to join a house with such an exceptional history and heritage, which over the years has shown an unwavering welcome and pride in the values I believe in… I am moved and excited to bring my creative vision to this brand,” Di Sarno said in a statement released by Kering.

Di Sarno is scheduled to present his first Gucci collection during Milan Women’s Fashion Week in September 2023.
