Liputan6.com, Jakarta – A new study found that light UV dryer which is used for manicure the gel damages DNA and causes mutations in cells.
“Given the way these devices are presented, they are being marketed as safe, with nothing to worry about,” study co-author Ludmil Alexandrov, a professor of biotechnology and cellular and molecular medicine at UC San Diego, said in a statement. New York PostFriday, January 27, 2023.
He continued, “But to the best of our knowledge, no one has really studied these devices and how they affect human cells at the molecular and cellular levels until now.”
In the study published last week in the journal Nature Communications, UC researchers analyzed three cell lines: human skin keratinocytes, human foreskin fibroblasts, and mouse embryonic fibroblasts. The study noted that exposure sinar UV during a single 20-minute session caused 20 percent to 30 percent of the cells exposed to die.
Meanwhile, three sessions each lasting 20 minutes caused 65 percent to 70 percent of cell death. The remaining cells are also not safe from harm, at risk of damage and DNA mutation, which then draws parallels with skin cancer.
“We see patients with Skin cancerand we saw the exact same pattern of mutations in these patients as was seen in the irradiated cells,” continued Alexandrov.
While research shows that more than 100 million US women use some type of nail product, it’s unclear how many opt for gel. According to the Cleveland Clinic, risk factors depend on how often they get manicures, says dermatologist Melissa Piliang in 2021.
