Asteroid as Big as Earth’s Pepet Bus, Closer to Satellite

Jakarta

Asteroid 2023 BU just crossed Earth at very close range. Fortunately, this asteroid is just passing by and does not pose a danger either in orbit or on Earth.

This bus-sized asteroid passed over the skies of South America on Friday (27/1) morning at 00.30 GMT or 07.30 WIB. This asteroid is very close to Earth, only 3,600 km above the Earth’s surface.

So close, the closest position of this asteroid is even lower than the position of telecommunications satellites which are at an altitude of 36,000 km. Fortunately the possibility of this asteroid hitting a satellite in orbit is also very small.

This asteroid was first discovered by amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisov operating in Crimea. Subsequent observations from astronomers and other space agencies could immediately determine the size and orbit of asteroid 2023 BU.

Thanks to these observations, NASA explained that asteroid 2023 BU won’t hit Earth. But if this asteroid were on a collision course with Earth, 2023 BU wouldn’t be able to cause as much damage.

With a diameter of 3.5 meters to 8.5 meters, this asteroid will immediately burn while still in the atmosphere. Even though it doesn’t hit Earth, this asteroid can create fireballs or fireballs when it burns in the sky.

Thanks to its very close trajectory to Earth, the orbit of the 2023 BU asteroid around the sun has changed. Gravity on Earth manages to attract asteroid this and change the course of his journey in space.

“Before approaching Earth, the asteroid’s orbit around the sun is approximately circular, approaching Earth’s orbit, it takes 359 days to complete its orbit around the sun,” NASA said in its official statement, as quoted by the BBC, Friday (27/1/2023).

“Upon approaching, the asteroid’s orbit will be more elongated, moving it about halfway between the orbits of Earth and Mars at its farthest point from the sun. The asteroid will complete one orbit every 425 days.”
