It turns out that this is the correct gear position for an automatic car when waiting for a red light

Automatic car gear position while waiting for a red light is often debated. Some say, the position of the transmission lever must be neutralized so as not to increase the workload of the transmission. But not a few also say that it doesn’t matter if the position of the teeth remains in D. So which one is correct?

Actually, the matter of the position of the transmission lever on an automatic car under certain conditions is listed in the manual. For example, in the Mitsubishi Xpander manual, it also explains the gear position while waiting for a red light.

Mitsubishi explains the position of the transmission lever can be on the selector lever by pressing the regular brakes. This means that it doesn’t matter if the lever position remains at D if the waiting time for the red light is short. But if the waiting time is longer, then move the transmission lever to the Neutral position.

“For short waits such as waiting for a traffic light, the vehicle can be left in the selector lever position and held still with the regular brakes. For longer waits with the engine running, place the selector lever in the ‘N’ position and apply the brake park, while holding the vehicle to rest with normal brakes,” wrote Mitsubishi in the Xpander manual.

In line with the Mitsubishi Xpander, in the Toyota Avanza manual it is also written that when the transmission lever is in D, press the brake pedal. If necessary, apply the parking brake.

“If the vehicle is stopped for a long time, position the transmission lever to P or N,” reads the statement.

So actually it doesn’t matter if while waiting for the red light to be in a fixed gear position in D, as long as you keep pressing the brakes. Or if you want to be safer, there’s nothing wrong with shifting the gear position to N and not forgetting to apply the brakes. Even when talking from a safety standpoint, driving safety experts also suggest that the gear position is in N while pressing the brakes while waiting for a red light.

“Why do we need a service brake (foot brake)? So that the driver behind knows that our car is stopped, it is indicated by the brake light that is on. If the parking brake is not on, the brake light won’t turn on. So if, for example, there is a driver from afar, his speed is still high, he will reflex to step on the brakes because when we see our brake light on, because the driver usually has a reflex when he sees the brake light on, we brake,” said SDCI Safety Driving Instructor Jacku Aryanto Rumokoi.
