Their images have not yet been released but those who have already seen them describe them as “disgusting” and “wild”. The video of the arrest in Memphis that led to the hospitalization and death of African-American Tire Nicholswill be released this afternoon and the Department of Homeland Security is already preparing for reactions across the country.
Police departments in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Nashville, Milwaukee, Seattle, Denver, Dallas, New York and Atlanta are closely monitoring events in Memphis. They anticipate large-scale protests.

“Acts that challenge humanity”
Video footage from a traffic stop that led to the 29-year-old’s fatal beating by five officers shows “acts that defy humanity,” Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said.
“You’re going to see a disregard for life, the duty of care we’ve all sworn to, and a level of physical interaction that is above and beyond what is required in law enforcement.”
Nichols’ stepfather, Rodney Wells, described video of his son’s arrest, telling CNN that an officer kicked him like he was kicking a football. “The most revealing thing about the video for me was the fact that there were maybe 10 officers on the scene and nobody tried to stop him or even after he was beaten and propped up, nobody gave him any help at all.”

US President Joe Biden has already conveyed his condolences to the family of the young African-American. He asked that the demonstrations be carried out in a peaceful manner. “Violence is destructive and against the law. It has no place in peaceful protests in search of justice,” he said in a White House statement.

For his part, the United States Attorney General, Merrick Garland, promised this Friday that there will be an investigation into the death of the young Nichols at hands and also urged that the protests be peaceful.
While the director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, confirmed that he saw the video and said he was “in shock” by the images. He explained that the FBI is working with the Department of Justice on the already open investigation.
The five defendants, all black, were expelled from the police force. The authorities determined that they were directly responsible for the death of Tire Nichols, who took 3 days to die from his injuries.
