Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo advanced to the finals Indonesia Masters 2023 after defeating Angus Ng Ka Long in a very dramatic and interesting duel 17-21, 27-25, 22-20 at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Saturday (28/1).
Chico seemed unable to play loosely at the start of the first game. On the other hand, Angus is more comfortable playing, especially when carrying out attacks.
Angus was able to lead 7-4 at the start of the first game, although Chico managed to equalize 8-8. Angus, who has Indonesian blood from his grandmother, had led 10-8, but Chico succeeded step up and turned things around to lead 11-10 at the interval.
The match was fierce until the position 17-17. But Chico made more mistakes at crucial points. Several times the hard smashes were unable to cross the net. Angus also won 21-17 in the first game.
In the second game Chico lost the start. Angus was able to show a solid game to win 3-11 over Chico.
Chico did not give up easily. The player born in Jayapura, Papua, is slowly but surely able to get closer to scoring points up to 8-12. Chico’s observation of the ball was very accurate several times until Angus made a mistake.
Unfortunately Chico failed to maintain a consistent rhythm of play. Having come close to being two points adrift, 12-14, Chico often did it himself which made Angus lead 18-13.
The match was even more interesting when Chico won four consecutive points to close 17-18. Mind games were successfully carried out by Chico when he refused to change shuttlecock which Angus requested. Chico then tied the score at 19-19.
Achievement points were the same 20-20 to 25-25. In a dramatic deuce situation, Chico finally won the second game with 27-25 after two hard smashes Angus was unable to stop.
In the third game the match continued to be tight. Chico and Angus share the same points up to 6-6, 8-8, up to 12-12. Angus didn’t strike for granted, even when trailing 12-16.
At crucial points, Chico played cleverly. The 24-year-old men’s singles net game succeeded in tricking Angus into winning 19-15.
The extraordinary defense of Chico became the determinant for Indonesia’s representative. Angus had forced it deucebut Chico managed to win 22-20 in the third game.
Chico’s victory made the All Indonesian Final happen. In the final match of the Indonesia Masters 2023, Sunday (29/1), Chico will face Jonatan Christie who successfully defeated Shi Yu Qi in the last four.
