The comments led opposition politicians to question whether he was fit for the job as Germany’s top diplomat.
“Baerbock’s statement that Germany is at war with Russia shows that he is not fit for the job,” Bundestag (Parliament) member Sahra Wagenknecht, former head of the Left Party, wrote on Twitter.
“A foreign minister should be a top diplomat and not act like an elephant in the China shop,” he continued, accusing Baerbock of trampling on Germany’s reputation.

During the debate on Tuesday, Baerbock said European nations were at war with Russia and must do more to defend Ukraine. His comments have been brushed aside by other European countries, including France.
“Germany needs a foreign minister who is able to act as a responsible diplomat and not an instigator in the midst of conflicts in Europe,” criticized Alice Weidel, co-chair Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the Bundestag, adding that a foreign minister must represent Germany’s interests exclusively.
Gerhard Papke, a member of the regional Parliament from North Rhine-Westphalia and president of the German-Hungarian Association, accused Baerbock of being “absolutely politically insane” for making the remarks.
Another Member of Parliament, Selim Dagdelen, was quoted as saying Russia TodaySaturday (28/1/2023), demanded that Chancellor Olaf Scholz provide an immediate explanation as to whether Baerbock had his government’s mandate for his declaration of war.
He added that the minister was a threat to the security of the German people.
