Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) followed in Germany’s footsteps. Where Uncle Sam’s country participated in sending its main battle tank (MBT) Abrams to Ukraine.
Quoting Newsweek, the certainty was announced directly by US President Joe Biden. “The United States will soon be sending 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine,” President Joe Biden announced his decision at the White House.
“The number of tanks is equivalent to one Ukrainian battalion,” Biden added as quoted Friday (26/1/2023).
Biden said this move had been recommended by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, because it would increase Ukraine’s capacity to defend its territory and achieve its strategic goals.
to Ukraine Biden described the Abrams tank as the most capable tank in the world but also said the armored vehicle was very complicated to operate and maintain.
“The US will also provide Ukraine with the tools, equipment and training it needs to sustain the tanks,” Biden said. Biden’s announcement came shortly after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany would send several Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
The two countries have been urged to increase their military support to Ukraine by sending armored vehicles over the past few weeks in anticipation of a possible new Russian offensive.
In this regard, Biden said the US decision to send Abrams tanks to Ukraine was not forced or influenced by Germany’s decision. “The Germans didn’t force me to change my mind,” he replied.
“We want to make sure that we are all together. That is what we will do all along, and that is what we are doing now,” he concluded.
