HKU students bring Mozart’s Requiem to life

Participating students are the strings of the Utrecht Conservatory String Orchestra, 75 Music in Education students united in the Education Choir and singing and choral conducting students from the Bachelor and Master of Music. The orchestra is led by the Bellamy Quartet, consisting of four teachers from HKU Utrecht Conservatory. Orchestra master is Lis Perry, violinist and teacher of HKU Utrecht Conservatory with 30 years of experience as concert master with Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mortality

A requiem or mass of the dead deals with a theme that concerns us all: our mortality. It sings about the way from darkness to light. This universal, timeless theme means that Mozart’s requiem, more than 230 years later, still appeals to the imagination. The students of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium bring the great classical work back to the here and now, with an energy and vitality that splashes from the stage.

Mozart’s last illness

Mozart’s Requiem is one of the most loved and appreciated works of Mozart’s entire oeuvre. He probably conceived and sketched the composition both before and during his last illness in November and early December 1791. At his death on December 5, 1791, the work remained unfinished. Mozart’s former student, friend and colleague Frans Xaver Süßmayr, completed the work in the spirit of the master. The requiem performed by HKU Utrechts Conservatorium is the completed version by Süßmayr.

Entrance to the concert is free. Due to the expected turnout, reservations are necessary. Reservations are possible via the ticketlink which will be available from January 27.
