Former Minister of Justice Michel Mercier convicted of embezzlement in France / Article

In France, former Minister of Justice Michel Mercier was convicted of embezzlement

As a senator of the French Parliament, between 2005 and 2009, Mercier had received 50,000 euros from the state budget for his wife’s alleged work as a senator’s adviser. On the other hand, between 2012 and 2014, Mercier received 37,000 euros from the state budget for his daughter’s work as a senator’s adviser.

The court found that while Mercier’s daughter had to perform the duties of an adviser, she stayed in London and did not work a single day in the French senate. Meanwhile, explanations given during the trial by Mercier’s wife about acting as a counselor, representing the senator at funerals and fairs, were rejected.

The court decided to sentence all the extras in the case to conditional prison sentences.
