The jury of the Ecumenical Comics Prize rewarded Marie Jafferdo’s album. A special mention was also awarded.
“Le Printemps de Sakura” by Marie Jafferdo published by Vents d’Ouest, was chosen by the jury members for the Ecumenical Comics Prize 2023. The story: Sakura, 8 years old, lives in Tokyo. Since the accidental death of her mother a few years ago, the little girl has not been able to overcome her grief. Obliged to be absent for a few weeks for professional reasons, her father, of French origin, decides to entrust her to her Japanese grandmother. But the first moments with this grandmother living in a traditional way to the rhythm of nature, plunge the child into even greater disarray! However, against all expectations, this stay will profoundly transform Sakura…
The album had already received the Golden Elephant of the France 3 Public Prize at the Chambéry festival in October 2022.
The prize was awarded to its authors on January 26, 2023 during the 50th Angoulême International Comics Festival. The Ecumenical Jury Prize for Comics 2022 had rewarded “White around” by Lupano and Fert (Dargaud).
A special mention was also awarded to “Perpendiculaire au soleil” by Valentine Cuny-Le Callet (Ed. Delcourt). The story: in 2016, Valentine Cuny-Le Callet begins a correspondence with Renaldo McGirth, condemned to death, imprisoned for more than 10 years in Florida. The book questions the brutality of a prison system, and the friendship that arises from a 5m2 cell.
