The brutal assault took place in the small Swedish town of Oskarshamn on a September evening last year.
Ulf Sandberg (52) was outside a restaurant in the city center when two men aged 27 and 30 allegedly held him down and tore the watch off his arm, according to the indictment which was issued on Wednesday, writes The Express.
In connection with the robbery, the 52-year-old is said to have been beaten and kicked repeatedly all over his body. The violence is said to have continued after Sandberg was left lying on the ground, at the same time as the two men are said to have pressured him for money.
Must have picked up a knife
According to the indictment, the 30-year-old allegedly encouraged the other man to continue using violence, while he himself filmed the assault with his phone.
The 27-year-old is said to have then gone to a nearby home to get a knife. In the meantime, the elderly man is said to have encouraged Sandberg to withdraw money from a nearby ATM, prosecutor Linda Caneus claims.
Now Elin (22) is dead
The police have investigated the video, in which the 30-year-old can allegedly be heard asking Ulf Sandberg to withdraw NOK 400 to avoid more abuse, the newspaper writes.
When the 27-year-old returned to the scene, he is said to have repeatedly stabbed the 52-year-old, who later died of his injuries in hospital.
Accused of murder
The two men are now charged with assault, aggravated robbery and several other offences, according to Expressen.
The 27-year-old is also charged with gross mistreatment of another person. This incident is said to have taken place just hours before Sandberg was beaten to death.
– The oldest of the men has told what he thinks happened at the scene. But he denies criminal guilt, says prosecutor Linda Caneus.
– Beaten to death
The 27-year-old is also accused of killing Ulf Sandberg, which he denies being guilty of.
Ulf Sandberg was a familiar face in Oskarshamn, a town in Småland with around 17,000 inhabitants. Among other things, he was a big supporter of the local hockey team IK Oskarshamn.
The local community was in deep mourning following the death on 23 September 2022, and gathered shortly afterwards for a large memorial ceremony to honor the 52-year-old.
– A person who has fought all his life and spread so much joy should not have to end his life in this way, his brother Per Sandberg previously told Expressen.
