After several months stagnant, the price of beef could rise around 30% in the coming days. In the meat industry, they warned that the increase could be between $300 and $400 per kilo, which would be reflected in the gondola between this week and next week.
It is worth clarifying that meat was one of the products that rose less than general inflation. In 2022 it had an increase of 42.4%, according to a survey of the Institute for the Promotion of Argentine Beef (Ipcva), well below the 94.8% who measured the Indec.
However, since last week the standing farm presented an increase of between 25% and 30% and, if it remains in this line, these values will be transferred to the counter. “You have to see if the consumer validates this price increase, because last year the animal increased around 40% compared to inflation,” explained Miguel Schiaritti, president of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Meats (Ciccra).
Too «we have to see if the trend [a la suba] can be maintained over time And what happens tomorrow, because around 8,000 heads enter, let’s see if prices hold up, stabilize or fall. If they hold up this week, next week it will be transferred to the counter and price increases will begin to be received in butcher shops”, Schiaritti concluded.
In the industry they talk about the fact that the price is not yet at the values it should be. It was explained that “to reach inflation we should have a price of around $510 per kilo, but even with these increases we are at $400 with good quality”. Perhaps that is a valid indicator: for the business to be profitable for the primary sector, 25% still remains to be adjusted in the price of the standing farm.
