Government Russia react angrily to the decision German to approve the delivery of the advanced Leopard 2 tank to Ukraine. Russia accused Berlin of neglecting its “historical responsibility to Russia” arising from Nazi crimes in World War II.
Reported by the news agency ReutersOn Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a Telegram post that the move was confirmation of Germany’s involvement in a “premeditated war” against Russia.
The Russian embassy in Berlin said the decision – which paved the way for other NATO members to also send the German-made tanks – would escalate 11 months of conflict in Ukraine.
“This extremely dangerous decision brings the conflict to a new level of confrontation,” said Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergei Nechayev. He added it would cause “irreparable damage to already miserable Russian-German relations”.
So far, there has been no immediate reaction from the President Vladimir Putin of the German decision.
Previously, the United States government had announced on Wednesday (25/1) morning local time, that it would send 31 Abrams battle tanks to help Ukraine expel Russian troops.
Germany took a similar step, which finally agreed to send tank Leopard to Ukraine after previously being reluctant. According to DW, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has agreed to supply Ukraine with advanced Leopard 2 tanks, a source told dpa news agency on Tuesday (24/1).
