Again, Village Funds are Proposed to Overcome Rabies in Flores-Lembata

Veterinarian (drh) Maria Margaretha Siko is injecting dogs belonging to residents in Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara, 25 September 2020, coinciding with World Rabies Day. In 2023, the number of rabies vaccines available is only 15,000 doses from state budget funds, so it is proposed that the Village Fund can be used to treat rabies in Flores-Lembata.

MAUMERE, COMPASS The Village Fund was again proposed as the best solution to overcome the scarcity of rabies vaccines for thousands of dogs in Flores-Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara. Each village allocates Rp. 15 million for vaccine procurement and is considered sufficient. The availability of rabies vaccine from the center in 2023 is only 15,000 doses. That’s simply not enough to handle a population of around 200,000 dogs in the nine counties.

General Secretary of the Flores-Lembata Rabies Prevention and Eradication Forum Asep Purnama in Maumere, Wednesday (25/1/2023), said that all parties need support to overcome rabies inWest Manggarai, Manggarai, East Manggarai, Ngada, Nagekeo, Ende, Sikka, East Flores, and Lembata Regencies. In these nine regencies, the endemic situation of rabies also affects the residents’ pet dogs.
