LONDON – A group of scientists managed to detect a radio signal believed to be sent from a galaxy located about nine billion light years from Earth.

As reported by the Daily Mail, a team of researchers from Canada and India were able to detect signals from a galaxy known as SDSSJ0826+5630, using a giant telescope near Pune in Maharashtra.

Reportedly, radio waves allow astronomers to understand the early formation of the universe which is believed to be around 13.7 billion years old.

According to cosmologist and co-author of the wave detection study, Arnab Chakraborty, the radio signals allowed them to see back in time.

“This is equivalent to looking back in time 8.8 billion years,” he said.

The radio signal received was not sent by aliens, but came from a star-forming galaxy that was emitted when the universe was only 4.9 billion years old.

In fact, it was the first radio signal of its kind to be detected at such a great distance.

Meanwhile, said Arnab, galaxies emit various types of radio signals.

“Until now we have only been able to detect certain signals from nearby galaxies, limiting our knowledge of galaxies around the earth,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Royal Astronomical Society announced the detection of the radio signal in their monthly notification.

He explained, the detected signal wave is an important discovery because its frequency is at a certain wavelength known as the `line 21 cm’.

This line is also known as the hydrogen line and is a line in the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation with a frequency of 1420.
