The 2023 UEFA Super Cup has been moved from Kazan to Athens, reported on the UEFA website.

The corresponding decision was made at a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee on Wednesday.

The match between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League will take place on 16 August.

Kazan received the right to host the match for the UEFA Super Cup in March 2020. Previously, there were no meetings for the UEFA Super Cup in Russia.

At the end of December, the Minister of Sports of Tatarstan Vladimir Leonov stated “RIA Novosti”that UEFA has not been in contact with Kazan for a long time regarding the match for the Super Cup.

The transfer of the match for the trophy was expected due to the retention of UEFA sanctions against Russian football.

On January 24, representatives of the RFU held a meeting with colleagues from UEFA. Sky Sports reported that the European football body will not yet return Russia to international tournaments and will take the UEFA Super Cup from Kazan.

UEFA in February 2022 removed Russian teams and clubs from competitions under their auspices, and also took away the Champions League final from St. Petersburg, which was subsequently held in the suburbs of Paris at the Stade de France with massive unrest.
