Shortly before fulfilling his profit dream, Luis Grassow surprisingly ended his career. He was under contract with Orlando City in the MLS.
Orlando – Luis Grassow’s big dream came true in December. The central defender, who was previously signed to college team UK Wildcats, was drafted by Orlando City in the MLS. He could have made his debut in the top North American league on February 26 against the New York Red Bulls. Instead, he surprisingly ended his career at the age of only 24.
Luis Grassow: Successful youngsters in Germany – but professional dreams don’t come true here
Luis Grassow, whose father Dennis Grassow was also a professional soccer player, was trained in Germany at SpVgg Unterhaching. Grassow Senior played for TSV 1860, among others. In the youth field it looked for a long time as if the son could also gain a foothold in German professional football.
In the U19 he was even captain of the Unterhachinger. In the end, however, he didn’t make a breakthrough with the pros. In the men’s division, he played for FC Pipinsried and SSV Ulm 1846 before briefly returning to his youth club TSV Neuried in 2019.
“Personal reasons”: Luis Grassow ends his soccer career in the USA
After deciding to study criminal psychology in the USA, Grassow ended up with the Wildcats in Kentucky a good three years ago. There he attracted the attention of several MLS clubs with strong performances and was ultimately nominated for the draft, where he was selected by Orlando.
Instead of appearing in the MLS, he decided to end his career early. Orlando City SC cites personal reasons on Twitter as the trigger for this decision. “We wish Luis all the best for the next stage of his life,” the club announced on social networks. (Kilian Drexl)
