Sometimes it can be scary: tachycardia, an irregular pounding of the heart when going to bed or dizziness when getting up. All these symptoms can come from blood pressure – and then it is extremely reassuring to be able to check it yourself. And so, if necessary, serious problems are recognized in good time and the long-term dangers of high blood pressure are counteracted.
Blood pressure is one of the keys to overall health. Those who suffer from high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, may have an increased risk of heart disease later in life. It is therefore never too early for a regular check – even if you currently have no complaints. Many people do not even know if they have high blood pressure. Nevertheless, high blood pressure is the number one widespread disease! With a blood pressure monitor, you can easily measure your blood pressure yourself and check it regularly. In order to be able to use such a device, no previous medical knowledge is required.
How do I measure blood pressure correctly?
Blood pressure monitors can measure blood pressure on both the upper arm and the wrist. Various tests have shown that the measurement results are also reliable on the wrist. Note, however, that the blood pressure on the right and left arm is always different. Therefore always measure on the same arm. Blood pressure is measured when you are sitting and resting. It is therefore better to remain seated for five minutes before using a blood pressure monitor. You should not cross your legs as this can falsify the result. Do not exercise or empty your bladder for at least 30 minutes before the measurement. Pay attention to the correct position of the cuff. This should be at heart level during the measurement. When measuring blood pressure on the wrist, it is also important that the wrist is at heart level. Rest your elbow on the table and measure on bare skin. Never attach the blood pressure monitor over a sweater or shirt.
Measuring blood pressure: You should know this when using your blood pressure monitor
- There are many different blood pressure monitors on the market. Some of them can too Herz–rhythm–irregularities recognize and display.
- give sphygmomanometers Information about two values: The systolic and diastolic blood pressure values – i.e. the pressure at which blood enters and exits the heart.
- According to the World Health Organization the optimal blood pressure is 120/80. Values above 140/90 indicate slight high blood pressure.
- When buying, you should make sure that the Cuff not too big or too small is, since the measurement results could possibly be falsified. smaller wrist–blood pressure monitors are also an option.
This is how a blood pressure monitor works
To determine blood pressure, the cuff inflates to the point where it temporarily stops blood flow in the upper arm. The pressure then slowly eases off. There is a sensor in the cuff that then measures the blood flow. The device can also count the number of heartbeats in a given time window. It then calculates what the heart rate is in one minute.
