Alonso: Schick has made great progress in the last two weeks, the return is closer

Schicka is suffering from lingering problems with his groin. Because of this, another operation was in play, which he underwent already in May, but in the end conservative treatment won out. Even a long break, also filled with the World Cup, was not enough for him to fully recover and he did not make it to the start of the spring part of the Bundesliga.

“Schick will definitely not start on Wednesday against Bochum. He feels much better, he has made great progress in the last two weeks,” Alonso said at a press conference.

His team’s next match will be against Dortmund on January 29. “It’s too early to return, but he’s closer,” said the Spanish world champion and two-time European champion.

Schick didn’t do nearly as well in the fall as he did last season, when he scored 24 goals in the German league and was the second best scorer in the competition. He significantly helped Leverkusen, for which the offensive all-rounder Adam Hložek also starts, to third place. In the current season, Schick scored three goals in 17 competitive duels. The ninth place belongs to Bayer.
