(ISTANBUL = Yonhap News) Correspondent Cho Seong-heum = Reuters reported on the 24th (local time) that Ukraine has carried out the first double-digit change of senior officials since the Russian invasion.
According to reports, among the officials who resigned or were dismissed on the day were the governors of five provinces: Kyiu, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.
These five states have been involved in major battles with Russia over the past year, which has made the position of governors in these regions exceptionally strong.
In addition, five people were replaced, including the Vice Minister of National Defense, the Deputy Prosecutor General, the Deputy Chief of the Presidential Office, and two Vice Ministers for Regional Development.
Some of the personnel targets are said to be suspected of corruption.
The Defense Ministry said Vyacheslav Shapovalou, the undersecretary for logistics, had resigned after pleading innocence to media reports of corruption allegations. Previously, local media reported that the Ministry of National Defense overpaid military food expenses, but the Ministry of Defense denied this.
Deputy Prosecutor General Oleksi Simonenko was replaced after being hit by public opinion after being reported in the media that he was on vacation in Spain. The Prosecutor’s Office did not make any statements regarding this appointment.
Kirilo Timoshenko, deputy head of the presidential office, also did not elaborate on the background of his resignation.
He supported President Volodymyr Zelensky in the 2019 presidential election and recently served as head of regional policy.
Ukraine, which has a deep-rooted corruption problem, needs measures to gain the trust of the international community in relation to aid during the war and post-war recovery.
Meanwhile, on the 21st, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Vasyl Roshinsky was arrested and dismissed for bribery charges.
Undersecretary Roshinsky is accused of accepting bribes worth 400,000 euros (approximately 536 million won) in connection with the purchase of generators.
In response, President Zelensky announced in a public address the night before that he would soon announce a plan for personnel reform in high-ranking positions in the central and local governments.
“Personnel decisions have already been made. Some of them will be finalized today or tomorrow, and they will span various levels and organizations within government ministries, regions and judicial systems,” he said.
“The president sees society, listens to public opinion, and will respond immediately to the public’s key demand for justice for all,” said Presidential Assistant to the President Mihailo Podolyak on Twitter.
