Recently, the online store giant Amazon roll out layoffs which caused 18,000 employees to lose their jobs. Now the method of dismissal is considered to be heartless because it is only via email, not face to face.
As quoted detikINET from the New York Post, Amazon employees who were fired complained that Amazon was only using email to tell them they were no longer needed by the company.
At least 5 laid-off employees said they received ‘cold-blooded’ letters from management. “Unfortunately, your job role has been removed,” Beth Galetti, a boss at Amazon’s human resources department, wrote in one of the emails.
“You are no longer obligated to perform any work on Amazon’s behalf,” said another notification via email.
Yes, none of the five former employees were summoned to meet directly with the manager before being fired. “Everyone is very upset,” said one of them.
Not only that, shortly after receiving the email, the laid-off employees said that their access to the company’s internal computer system was immediately cut off. When asked for confirmation, Amazon only said that at this time it was indeed a difficult time.
“Management is keenly aware that eliminating this employee role is difficult for people, and we are not taking this decision lightly or underestimating how much it impacts the lives of those affected,” Amazon said.
The technology giants seem to be competing to lay off thousands of employees in the midst of an uncertain economic situation. Before Amazon, Twitter and Meta have taken similar action. Most recently, Alphabet announced layoffs of 12 thousand employees worldwide.
