Indonesian Citizens Convicted of Harassing Women During Umrah, PD Legislator: Government Missed

Jakarta

Member of Commission I DPR RI Faction of the Democratic Party Rizki Natakusumah regretted the incident of an Umrah congregation with the initials MS from Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi, who was sentenced to 2 years in prison for harassment of a woman from Lebanon during the tawaf at the Grand Mosque. Rizki thinks the Indonesian government has been caught off guard.

“The Indonesian government has clearly been blindsided for months by the situation of Indonesian citizens in Saudi who are currently undergoing legal proceedings. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indonesia’s representatives in Saudi must investigate this case from the beginning of the incident until the court decision is issued,” Rizki said to reporters, Monday (23 /1/2023).

For your information, MS was sentenced to a prison sentence of 2 years and a fine of 50 thousand riyals on December 20, 2022. However, the Indonesian Consulate in Jeddah did not receive any information from the Saudi authorities regarding the trial that MS was undergoing and received consular access to meet MS on January 2, 2023.

Returning to Rizki’s statement, he said the issue of this case would be confusing as long as the Indonesian government did not provide an explanation. According to him, if these incidents occurred since November 2022, why did the Umrah agency in question not report to the Indonesian representative in Saudi Arabia?

“The Indonesian government should also be proactive in protecting Indonesian citizens in Saudi Arabia. Don’t just wait for notifications from local authorities,” he said.

He was concerned about the events that befell MS. Rizki hopes that the Indonesian government will immediately provide adequate assistance so that the legal process can be carried out objectively.
