Ferrari electric cars are supposed to make real sound, not reproduce a recording

For cars with internal combustion engines, it is normal for some sound to be emitted by the internal combustion engine or the exhaust. But electric cars have neither and can therefore drive silently, which of course turns out to be a problem. In terms of safety in the city, this is solved by the mandatory emission of artificial sound up to a certain driving speed.

However, in terms of how the driver works with the car, so far only some models play some artificial sound in the cabin, which is supposed to give the impression of speed. Ferrari wants to do it differently with its electric cars – it does not yet produce any, but they are planned for the future.

According to a patent application filed with the US Patent Office, it wants to amplify the actual sounds made by the electric motor and other parts of the car. Of course, not with the help of speakers, but with the help of a resonator located somewhere near the drivetrain, with which the system is supposed to create a real audible sound of the drivetrain, writes the website CarBuzz, which first noticed the request.

It goes without saying that the carmaker will be able to tune the sound so that it can be listened to in the vernacular; tuning exhaust systems with the same goal is common for internal combustion engines. However, it should not be reproduced in any way, it should be directly dependent on the load of the electric motor and its speed.

How it will look – and especially sound – in reality, of course, we have to wait until Ferrari unveils its first electric car. According to the latest reports, it should appear by 2025.
