The second day of racing in the German gallop season at the racecourse in Dortmund-Wambel on Sunday was all about his guests from Mannheim. Coach Marco Klein sent four starters from Baden to the Ruhr area and the result was more than impressive: three wins and one second place. Stable jockey Tommaso Scardino was in the saddle on all four rides.

Wintry conditions prevailed in Dortmund on Sunday. There was snow all around the sandy track, the temperatures just barely stayed in the positive range. “It was only possible to prepare the track in such a way that the races could take place at all thanks to the full commitment of all employees in advance,” said Günther Gudert, managing director of the Dortmunder Rennverein.

Bavaria Iron further enhances the form
The four-year-old Bavaria Iron won the 5,500-euro golf range winter prize on the Dortmund racetrack, a compensation III over 1,950 m, as the 2.6:1 favorite, ahead of Aradous. Before that, the small protégé Lommerzheim (4.0:1) had gotten the compensation IV over 1,800 m in the price of Gestüt Hofgut Heymann. The last two-time winner, Lion Hunter, came back five lengths. And the six-year-old Muzy (2.9:1) finished the sales race over 1,200 m for Klein and Scardino.

“We’ll see how we continue on clay in the next few weeks,” said Klein. “We won’t break anything over the knee.” The next race day is in two weeks on February 5th in Dortmund. Klein had already scored at the start of the year a week ago in Wambel: With one win and two second places from three starters, he was able to start the 330 km long journey home to Mannheim-Seckenheim.

Sunny Star seems to kick off
At the start, Sunny Star (4.4:1), trained by Marian Falk Weißmeier, with Sean Byrne just caught Christian von der Recke’s protégé Conquering in compensation IV over 2,500 m. 30 minutes later in the Strategy X race, von der Recke was happy about Jungle Bee’s success. The four-year-old English import saved himself with Anna van den Trost in the 1,200m handicap (compensation IV) against Vinnare with a half-length lead to the finish.

It was a surprise for the punters, as there was a 12.2:1 victory. Not so for the Jungle Bee rider: “It was the right distance and with blinders on. We already thought that it could work today,” said the Belgian, who has been a fixture in Germany for a few years. Six-year-old Fidelius (13.7: 1) for owner trainer Petra Gehm and Robin Weber also ensured an outsider success in compensation IV over 1,950 m.

Winter moon makes an impression
The five-year-old stallion Wintermond (2.1:1) made a strong impression, beating four competitors in the 1,950 m race without a win. “The course of the race wasn’t even ideal, because he had a bit of a fight with Palatina at the front,” said winning rider Sibylle Vogt. “But he showed his class.” In the end, the slightly favored Palatina was only third behind Amely Adventure. The winner’s coach is Bohumil Nedorestek.
