Emergency call abuse leads to larger police operation in Frankfurt | news city

The misuse of an emergency call application for smartphones by a previously unknown person led to a major police operation in a mosque on Praunheimer Landstrasse on Friday evening, January 20, 2023.

According to the information provided by the informant, a killing spree using firearms was taking place at the said location at the time. About 20-25 people are still in the premises, of which two to five people are injured and hostages are already in the hands of the perpetrator.

The emergency services secured the entrance area of ​​the mosque and entered the premises. Those found were escorted outside and questioned. The searches of the rooms and the questioning of the people were negative, no indications of a criminal offense or a dangerous situation could be found. The incident was explained to a responsible person in the municipality by the police operations manager on site and the migration officer at the police headquarters in Frankfurt am Main.

Investigations into who caused it are still ongoing. Criminal charges of pretending to be a criminal offense and misuse of emergency calls were filed.
