In the past year, Latvian residents bought cars equipped with a diesel engine less and less in the new car market, while the demand for new electric cars increased 2.5 times compared to the previous year. Last year, Toyota again became the most purchased car brand, while Toyota RAV4 was the most popular model, according to the information collected by Citadele Leasing.

Toyota, VW and Škoda are among the three most popular car brands for the second year in a row, while in the category of the most popular car model in Latvia there have been changes – the Toyota Corolla has replaced the Toyota RAV4 in the leading position.
Private individuals have most often purchased Toyota RAV4, VW T-CROSS and Nissan QASHQAI models on lease, while legal entities have respected RAV4 and Corolla manufactured by Toyota, as well as Renault MASTER cars.
Neutral colors such as grey, white and black are still at the top of the list of favorite car colors. On the other hand, the top 3 bright colors are blue, red and green.
Citizens buy cars with diesel engines less and less – in the past year, new diesel cars were bought by 8% less, while the registration of gasoline car purchases recorded an increase of almost a fifth, or 19%. Meanwhile, alternative powered engines have become even more popular – their number has doubled in 2022. Taking into account the population switching to more environmentally friendly cars, the average amount of CO2 emissions of new cars purchased in 2022 decreased by approximately 5%.
Last year, the number of leased cars in Latvia increased by 10% compared to the previous year, while the number of new cars purchased increased by 13%. Private individuals purchased new cars by 6% more, while legal entities’ purchases of new cars were registered 18% more often than in 2021.
The biggest increase was recorded in the electric car segment, where the number of new electric cars increased by 151%. At the same time, the number of leasing purchases has increased even faster – electric cars were purchased through leasing by 180% more than a year ago, according to car market statistics.
“The increase in the number of electric cars on Latvian roads is the result of the state support program, and the sales figures of not only electric cars, but also hybrid cars are growing. Taking into account the increasingly wide availability of new models on the local market, as well as the potential to introduce a support program for legal entities, the number of electric cars with us has reason to grow in the future as well,” says Pēteris Plaudis, head of Citadele Leasing.
