After the meeting of defense ministers of Ukraine’s allied countries held last week in Ramstein, Germany, no decision was made regarding the supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, a lot of criticism has been directed towards Germany. Mainly because several Western countries only want to receive permission to supply tanks from Germany – this would allow them to send aid to Ukraine, while Berlin itself remains in contemplation.
As announced by German Foreign Minister Annelene Burbock, Berlin could allow Poland to supply Ukraine with its coveted Leopard tanks. Burbok has said that Berlin does not want to stand in the way of Warsaw, but an official request is expected from Poland. It should be recalled that Burbock represents the Green Party in Germany’s ruling coalition, while both Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Chancellor Olaf Scholtz are from the Social Democrats, who have been more cautious in their decisions.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has admitted that a few dozen Western tanks will not solve the whole problem, as Russia has a thousand tanks. However, according to the president, the supply of tanks would certainly help to motivate Ukrainian soldiers, because it would create a feeling that the whole world is with Ukrainians.
Zelensky also dismissed German concerns that the Leopard tanks would be used as an offensive weapon. According to him, “Leopard” will not enter Russian territory, because Ukraine is defending itself and it is not interested in Russian lands or people.
While Germany is still late with its armaments deliveries,
French President Emmanuel Macron has admitted that French Leclerc tanks could be handed over to Ukraine.
Macaron has admitted that such deliveries must be coordinated with allies, including Germany, and must not threaten France’s own security.
