“Avatar: The Way of Water” rounded the magical border on Sunday.
Director James Cameron can thus breathe a sigh of relief that the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster has lived up to expectations.
By the end of this week, the film can count two billion recorded kroner since the opening before Christmas, reports Reuters.
That is close to NOK 20 billion.
It has never been stated concretely what the budget for the new “Avatar” was, but Cameron is said to have stated, according to Reuters, that the film must earn around two billion dollars for the project to break even.
After almost six weeks in cinemas, “Avatar: The Way of Water” has placed itself at number six on the list of the highest-grossing films of all time. About NOK 14 billion of the earnings originate from the market outside the USA’s borders.
In Norway, the film reigns supreme at the top of Kinotoppen for the fifth week in a row, with nearly 550,000 tickets sold in total.
The first “Avatar” movie enchanted the world when it came out in 2009. At the time, the film grossed over NOK 700 million in the US on its opening weekend, according to today’s rates.
The new one was recorded in New Zealand. Norwegian Einar Martinsen (32) has had a hand in the game.
“Avatar: The Way Of Water” is the first of four sequels to the 3D adventure.
