South Africa is the stage of the 23rd season of Who is the mole?. Ten well-known Dutch people have tried to reveal who the saboteur in their midst is. NU.nl speaks every week with the dropout from the night before. This week that is journalist Sander de Kramer.
“You have a scoop,” says De Kramer when NU.nl speaks to him. The journalist appears to have spent only one day in the drop-out hotel and then went back to building schools in Sierra Leone.
That he was given the space to do so is quite remarkable, according to him. As a participant in Who is the mole? you have a lot of secrets to keep. That starts the moment you are asked to join the program and continues as the season progresses. If someone asks you exactly when you lost weight, you should wisely keep your mouth shut. And you can’t say anything about the further course of the program. Let alone that you can tell someone who the saboteur is.
Social media is closely monitored by the fans of the program (Molloten) and even images from security cameras have sometimes been used to find out who was in the final of the program. The fact that Sander de Kramer managed to keep quiet that he dropped out fairly early in the game turns out to be a miracle when NU.nl speaks to him: with a little detective work, the Mollots could have found out.
“I asked the production if it was possible that I would still go on the road, because at that time I had work to do in Sierra Leone and would like to continue with it. Because it is a country where there is very little tourism, let alone the Dutch , I got permission for that. Quite special, because they really don’t just do that. I was very happy with that, because there were quite a few decisions to make when building schools and now I could do that.”
“In total I have been to Africa at least a hundred times and all those times I have not contracted malaria. And now that went wrong and I immediately got the deadliest variant: malaria tropica. When putting my suitcase on the belt for the return journey I got a chill and on the plane I got sicker and sicker.”
“When I arrived in the Netherlands, I was immediately taken to Erasmus MC and I turned out to be there just in time. The malaria made me so sick that if I had been there five hours later, it would have affected my brain. Very intense and I’m glad I got there still am.”
“Anyway: Erasmus MC asked me to give a lecture about this and to tell them what it is like to have malaria. And that was picked up by some media. So a good detective could have known that I had left for another country, because in South Africa malaria hardly occurs.”
So you’re mostly happy that you’re still here and not so concerned with the fact that you’re the third dropout?
“Haha, well, it puts things into perspective. But I am very happy that I was able to participate: I had such a great time. Rik (van de Westelaken, presenter, ed.) also told me that he never seen such a happy dropout. Isn’t that wonderful? I’m going to the Who is the mole?history books as the happiest dropout ever. You want that.”
“You know, I just really enjoyed myself. I’ve been to many intense places for my work. In Afghanistan, in Congo, in Rwanda. Then it’s very nice to be able to do something fun and light-hearted, it keeps me balanced . I am very grateful that I was able to experience this. But yes, it remains just a game. “
Still, I can imagine that when you saw yesterday’s episode you were very disappointed with your fellow candidates. You tell honestly that there is a possibility for jokers and you all agree to go for the 2,000 euros. Until the broadcast you did not know that Daniël Verlaan, Soy Kroon and Jurre Geluk had lied to you. Are you disappointed that you didn’t catch those jokers yourself?
“So, that was lame, wasn’t it? I found it quite intense to see how easily they turned. I really thought we were going for the pot and that we all made sure that this would be the worst Mole ever Turns out that 2,000 euros never came into the pot. But no, I could never have done this like that. Then I would have had to sew my buddy Nabil (Aoulad Ayad, ed.) And the group. I’m not like that. “
Be honest: did you really not shed a tear when you saw Froukje de Both and Sarah Janneh in the drop-out hotel?
“Haha, no not really. When I walked down the boulevard, all I thought was: I’m in South Africa and I’m going to enjoy it. I treated myself to a delicious glass of red wine and really enjoyed it. Just like of this adventure.”
