Causes of FIP in cats

According to a veterinarian from Nusa Cendana University, Aji Winarso, Feline Infectious Peritonitis or FIP is a peritonitis disease in cats caused by a virus.

Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the inner abdominal wall and covers the organs in the abdomen.

Aji explained that the feline coronavirus (FCoV) will spread through the blood to various organs of the body, causing the cat to be FIP positive.

“This virus attacks the epithelial cells in the lining of the internal organs and the cat’s stomach wall,” he explained to Kompas.com, Saturday (21/1/2023).

He said, FIP has two types, namely dry and wet. The difference between the two lies in the symptoms shown.

Cat those who experience dry FIP will have lumps on their internal organs.

Meanwhile, wet FIP will cause the cat to experience edema or a bloated stomach cavity filled with fluid.

“So the fluid comes out of the virus infection sites. Over time it accumulates and causes the stomach to bulge,” he explained.
