Dr. Hossam Mowafi, Professor of Critical Cases at the Faculty of Medicine, Kasr Al-Ainy, warned of a serious disease that affects children, and it cannot be diagnosed with analyzes or imaging tests.
Mowafi said during his program “My Lord, Increase Me in Knowledge”, broadcast on Sada Al-Balad channel, that the disease he is referring to is rheumatic fever, explaining that the cause of children’s infection is due to a bacterial infection that targets the tonsils.

The professor of critical care medicine stressed that the clinical examination is the only effective method in diagnosing rheumatic fever in children, which is considered a complication of the streptococcus microbe.

He explained that sore throat is one of the warning signs of a child’s infection with the streptococcus microbe, stressing the need to expedite its treatment, because the toxins released by this infection into the bloodstream may negatively affect the organs of the body, especially the heart, joints and brain.

Mowafi concluded his speech by revealing a drug that helps protect children who are frequently infected with the streptococcus microbe from rheumatic fever, which is penicillin, noting the importance of obtaining it every 15 days or 3 weeks, and stopping taking it after reaching the age of 25 years.
