A federal judge United States of America (USA) sentenced former President Donald Trump and his lawyers to pay nearly US$1 million (Rp 15.1 billion) in a ‘frivolous’ lawsuit claiming Hillary Clinton tried to cheat the 2016 election.
As reported AFPOn Friday, US district judge John Middlebrooks said Trump, who is seeking re-election in 2024, had shown a “continuing pattern of abusing the courts” and filed the lawsuit “to smooth over a dishonest political narrative”.
The lawsuit, which Middlebrooks rejected last year, claims that Hillary, who lost to Trump in the 2016 election, and others have created a false narrative accusing the Trump campaign of colluding with Russia.
Trump seeks damages of US $ 70 million in this lawsuit.
However, Middlebrooks, in a 45-page written order, stated that the suit “should never have been filed”.
“The insufficiency of the suit to become a lawsuit was evident from the outset. No reasonable attorney would have brought the suit. It was intended for political purposes, no amendment of the suit stated that the lawsuit was recognized,” Middlebrooks wrote in the court order. .
The order also sentenced Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba.
