Andy Murray celebrated an epic second-round comeback win at the Australian Open – which didn’t end until after 4am!
In five hours and 50 minutes, the Briton prevailed against Thanasi Kokkinakis 4: 6, 6: 7, 7: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5. It was the longest game of his long career – only three minutes were missing from the tournament record at the Grand Slam event Down Under.
In 2012, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were three minutes longer in the final.
Murray, former world No. 1, fell two sets behind Australia’s Kokkinakis – but didn’t let that get him down. Which was probably because the 35-year-old wasn’t standing with his back to the wall on the big tennis stage for the first time.
Comeback king Murray tops Federer
On the contrary: for the tenth time he turned 0: 2 after sets. No other player in the Open Era has done that before him.
Todd Martin and Roger Federer are each on nine comparable comeback wins.
In the opening game, Murray went over five sets against Matteo Berrettini. His duel with Kokkinakis ended at 4:06 a.m. local time. In round three Murray meets Roberto Bautista Agut (Spain / No. 24).
