Musician and singer Stefan Lohse: Music for the soul in Buxtehude

Music is in his blood: musician and singer Stefan Lohse not only teaches singing, but also writes his own songs. Last year he was on the road as a street musician in the city center of Buxtehude for the first time.

Every Wednesday – depending on the temperature and weather conditions – Lohse went out with his guitar and played around twelve of his own songs for the people of Buxtehude. For a good three quarters of an hour, the musician sang texts he had written himself in German and English and was happy about everyone who listened. The people’s reactions to his music were particularly beautiful and interesting: Some stopped, enjoyed the melodies and were touched by the lyrics, children sometimes danced in the pedestrian zone and young people watched the performance as they passed by.

But before he could even give his first performance in the city center, there was a lot to do. Lohse, who was born in south-west Germany, produced his songs in his own studio and published them on the internet under the stage name “Südseele”. And most of his songs were written on the keyboard – impractical for a street performance. “So I had to ‘translate’ my songs to the guitar,” the musician explained.

No sooner said than done: After the first seven songs had been switched to guitar, Lohse first moved to the Mühlenteich and shortly afterwards to the city park in Buxtehude to try out his songs in public and get used to them. After a few performances in nature, we headed towards the city center.

Stefan Lohse wants to make people happy with his music, even if his songs often contain melancholic sounds. “I always try to write my songs positively and with a wink,” says Lohse. He has many ideas, so that new songs are always created.

At the age of 14, Lohse started with music and also with songwriting. “Music has always been my passion,” said Lohse. His performances in Buxtehude were not his first as a street musician. He used to travel with his band through Germany and Europe to make music everywhere.

In addition to his own music, Lohse teaches singing and choirs in Buxtehude, Harsefeld and Hamburg. He will return as a street musician in the Hanseatic city when the temperatures rise again – and maybe Stefan Lohse will not only be seen and heard in Buxtehude, but also in Stade.
