According to the Reuters news agency, Russia’s former president and prime minister Dmitry Medvedev comes with a warning:
– If a nuclear power loses in a conventional war, it could trigger a nuclear war, says Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.
The world’s largest
Russia has the world’s largest arsenal of nuclear weapons. according to Federation of American Scientists has landed 5,977 nuclear warheads, against the US’s 5,428.
Take over if Putin dies
During the Ukraine war, Medvedev has come up with a number of far-reaching proposals, including about the border drawing after a Russian victory in the conflict.
The 57-year-old shared on his Telegram account a map where Ukraine has almost been erased. In addition to Russia having taken most of the territory, the rest is divided between Poland, Hungary and Romania. Only a small part around Kyiv remains Ukrainian.
– Played his role
Medvedev took over the presidency from Vladimir Putin in 2008, until the latter made a comeback and the two switched positions as president and prime minister in 2012.
The 57-year-old has held the position of deputy chairman of the Security Council since 2020. Jakub M. Gozimirski, Russia researcher at the Norwegian Foreign Policy Institute (NUPI), told Dagbladet this summer that he now appears as a strange figure.
– As president, he fronted Russia’s liberal project, but now he makes statements that fuel the conflict with Ukraine. He has played out his role in Russian politics, and no one takes him seriously, Godzimirski said.
