Suzuki is developing a two-speed gearbox

Japanese automaker Suzuki is working with Canadian unit Inmotive Suzuki to develop a two-speed gearbox for its future electric car.

Since electric motors develop full power even at low revs, they usually have only one gear. However, the use of power becomes more efficient when the car moves in a certain speed range. Suzuki also decided to use this circumstance, and when creating its new gearbox with two speeds, it will try to ensure that the electric motor always works in this optimal range.

Higher efficiency translates into longer range and better driving performance. According to Suzuki, energy consumption can be reduced by up to 15 percent, improving the car’s acceleration by exactly the same amount.

The new unit will be used by Suzuki for the fully electric crossover eVX, which premiered as a prototype last week. It is known that this 4.30 m long vehicle will turn into a serial version by 2025.
